the beggining of the end pt 4 inbound campo!

so last time i left you zach and daniel and i were all at my house and we were gearing up for the outbound camp(oh by the way when we went to pick up zach we discovered what is quite possibly the greatest form of transportation on earth!
THE TRAIN!!
its SOO much better than the busses, cause well all the windows are open, so you never have to worry about it getting super hot in there, its way faster, and finally it costs like 30 baht(less than a dollar) to go like 50 or so Km!

alright were was i?
oh yeah so we woke up early that mornig, and the 3 of us got on a bus headed to korat, once we got there we did what we always do to kill time...
GO TO 7!!!
while we were ther we met an old farang man who was buying some... beers i think and he asked us where we were from, and struck up a convo with us, and we learned that he was from scotland(ridiculous accent) but had spent the last 50 yeas of his life in california 25 in san diego, and the last 25 as a carnie in the sanfrancisco!
pretty intrestin guy, when we asked him if he could speak english, his answer(in crazy scottish accent was
"FOOK! i 'an b'rly spick 'inglish!!"

anyways after mwe got our slurpees we headed back to the bus/screaming metal deathtrap and hopped on to go to this cam which was like 3 hours outside of civilizationwe passed the time by sitting n the back step and you know trowing paper airplanes at cars, dragging objects on bits of string, guys stuff.

so once we get therewe unpack oour stuff, and just hang out with eachother, three students were picked to un the camp, and they had lots of games, and activites planned, overall it was a great week,
one of the games was an air band contest, which i put ours up on youtube(http://www.youtube.com/user/rynalias)
i really cant plug that enough...

sooo what else, also we got to play alot of guitar, and sign things(like you know yearbooks),play with water balloons, climb ropes courses basically do whatever we wanted..
and the last night we stayed up superlate, and a friend put together an awesome slideshow of pics of all our trips
overall it was a great capoff to our trips!

so this is a short one i guess, but hey i did load 2 new videos on my youtube(the adress is in the blog)its a documentary that zach and i made!

well im done im gonna watch a movie

the beggining of the end pt 3 ryan the destitute/current events

alright.
so last time i left you i was talking about man week right???
alright , so due to some events in man week one week later we foundourselves with next to no cash and two of my friendswith major bruises, scrapes and cuts all over themselves!
(dont ask now, i cant tell you until im out of the country)

so whilst sitting in a bus station contomplating our future, how we'd get home and the state of my friends physical health we came up with a brilliant idea, my friend andrew and i would use the last of our money to make it to banbueng(stll 7 hours away from my home in khon kaen) andrew would then use his extra to get home the next day, while i(literally i have no money at this point) would stay with daniel at his house for the next 10 days until my host mom came to the south for a rotary confrence, upon which i would meet up with her, and then daniel would come back to my house with me until the outboud camp on the 7th!
(whew that took a while to explain, trust me, it took us quite a while to reate this plan and ok it with mae tuk, but one wrench which ill get back to later was that daniel had no phone, sowe were never really able to ok it with his host mom)

so here we are the three of us on a bus to banbeung, when it starts to dump rain! i thought it wasnt that big of a deal at first, until the bus dropped the three of us off on the side of the highway about 2k away from daniels house!

so right now its monsoon status rain, and were grappling withour bags, and me with my guitar when we spot shelter....kinda

on the side of the road was a row of unused sections of concrete sewer pipes so the tree of us rush over to our respective pipe, trow our bags in, and wait out the storm inside these 5 foot pipes!
it was AWESOME!

so after a while the rain stopps and we start the hike to daniels house we settle in for the night not knowing what boring hell awaits us...

the next day andrew sets off, and and daniel realizes that his ankle is alot bigger than it was las night(remember 2 of us were pretty banged up) and apparenty is in alot of pain, so we find a motorcycle taxi, both of us climb on and head off to the hospital!

after lots of wait time, xrays, and hospital bills which we some how with our mediocre thai skills got them to let us pay next week!
we found out that it wasnt broken, jsut really badly bruised and a little infected(daniel never listened to me!)

so at first we thought the next week and a half wouldent be so bad, we had tons of dvds and well we downloaded pokemon on his computer so we were playin that like cazy!

we lasted like 2 day before we started goin a little bit nuts.
no money=no food
no money=no were to go
no money=no new movies
no money=ryan and daniel sitting on the couch staring at the wall.

we were seriously climbing the walls, until one day, remember how i said that his mom didnt know that i was gonna be staying there?
well once we got there he asked, and she grudginly said yes(not the nicest lady, but hey she still let me sleep there for like 5 days so she cant be that bad)
after 5 days though she kinda welll...
changed her mind?

yep she really didnt give me a reason but she said that shed give daniel his allowance early, and with that we could leave to my house and sit out our time until the outbound camp there!

well were didnt argue.
next day i thanked her profusely for herhospitality and the both of us got the H outta dodge!

so once we got home i found atm card(i left it on my desk, thats why i was broke)
and instantly i was rich!
so for the next week or so we stayed at my house and just hung out, my other friend zach came by too, and the 3 of us counted the days till the out bound camp!

more on that later!

now ill give you a little current events
today i PACKED!
yep
i packed every scrap of clothing i own into my bag today it was wierd seeing my empty closet.
now all ive got left to take care of is all of my non clothes itemsbooks, pics ect you know all those random things ive accumulated over 10 months!
ive made a deal with a friend of mine in kk shes gonna come over and help me figure out what to pack and what to toss, as long as i go over there and help her do the same thing!
wow i never really thought this time would come!

what else?
oh, just something cool that happened today...
today it rained pretty hard, but i had to mail so me letters, buy some blank cds, and pick up some lunch, so i just grabbed my umbrella and ipod and walked the streets of my village running errands in the rain!
it was awesome! it made me kinda sad i was leaving so soon!
it was one of those moments where i thank god for letting me be in thailand!
any ways i thought it was pretty boss so hey im writing about it!
hmmm thas all i got for now

10days and counting!

well its been great, "but im quite sleepy"
so...
bye

the beggining of the end pt 2 man week!

alright, so as some of you may know as far as the ratio of guys to girls goes, its pretty much three to one!
which at some times is ok, maybe even preferable, but you know that after a while us guys start to......
um how do i put this nicely.....
get a little antsy!

we all decided we needed a little bit of a break from all of the women so we concocted the idea of a"man week"
yep
all men
all week.

so after much cajoling of our host familys,
6 guys found ourselves at my friend julians house, about an hr away from the shore!

the next day we all hopped on a bus, then we got onto a ferry for another hour till we found ourselves on the island of koh chang!
yep for one week all six guys would be strande3d on an island off the coast of thailand!

ands so for the next 6 days we spent our time sitting on the beach, smoking cigars, and drinking smoothies!

and really thats all i can say about that online.
so, if you want to know more, please look me up in 11 days, or hit me up with an email @ ryn_alias@yahoo.com and i would be more than happy to recap the events of that week!
im really sorry but weve got rules..

thats my story for tonight, see you tomorow!!

the beggining of the end pt 1 song kran

wow, so its been quite a while, since ive posted hasnt it???
sorry bout that!
its just that things have gotten pretty hectick, and in the last month or so ive been in korat, bangkok, kohn kaen, koh chang, chanta buri, chonburi, ban bueng, and udon thani!!

where to begin, alright, ill jump off from songkran!
songkran, is the biggest festival in thailand, and it takes place in april, one of the hottest monthes in thailand!
what is songkran, to put it very blunt, and mind numbingly simple, all you do is throw water at anyone, and everyone, and if you see any poosaus(its like the thai word for babes, you know foxes-shaa-wing) you rub white powder on thier faces(why, honestly? beats me.)
basically its the thai new year, and the water is like washing away the old year, anyways, thats my understanding of it, so i was going to korat andi i was gonna chill with my friends thier for a few days, then head back for the last few days of the festivalwith my host family, but some complications came up, and well... i found myself with out a place to stay, so i called around, and found that a few friends of mine were in bangkokfor a few days, and had a couch i could crash on, so i hopped on a bus and headed west to meet up with my friends!

so once i got there, dropped off my bags and everything, we went out to kao sarn road(backpacker haven) and pretty much for the next 2 days, bought supersoakers, and walked the streets of bangkok getting in water and baby powder fights with anyone we met!!
songkran is probably the greatest holiday on earth, anyone up for celebrating once i get back???

so after 2 days there i hopped back on the bus and went back to kk to meet up with my host family, as soon as i got there, me, 3 of my cousins and my host bro piled into the back of a pickup truck carrieng 2 garbage buckets ful of water and ice(makes it colder, duh)
and proceded to drive up and down the mainstreet of khon kaen throwing water from our buckets at paserbys motorcycle drivers ans other people in the backs of other pickups!
that night i went to a street concert with my host bro and cousins
this street was PACKED and it had stages all down the street with a plethora of bands playing, form hiphop, to metal, to screamo, to traditional! Everything and anything music wise was playing!
after we got home the cousins and i stayed up playing video games for a while(i havent played video games in ages!!) then we all crashed, and well to make a long story short, we did it all over again to mmoro!!
and that ladies and gentlemen is SONG KRAN!!!

again im very sorry i havent posted, but as you can see the title is the beggining of the end pt 1
so each night from here on out ill try to write about a major event that has happened!
these are gonna be a little short, but hey its what i got...

well 12 days left in thailand
see you tommoro!

rabies angels chiken fights ear piercing dancing elephants manholes nightmarkets cardgames and more,(thisis the longest post ive ever done!)

alright its been so long since ive posted, and for that im sorry, this one took me a while to write, and even longer to procrastinate about writing it!

so heres what happened
so i rode with my 2 moms to korat, where my mom got to meet my friends, after she said good bye, she headed out with my host mom to bangkok, leaving me.
you know once again.
to fend for myself.
but hey ill be fine!

where was i oh yeah, after making some runs to 7-11 and playing some football with my friends in the parkin lot we ate, then piled on the bus!
buss ride was pretty uneventful, just hung out listend to music(new jack johnson cd is awesome thanks aunt lisa!)
if i remember any thing monumental ill be sure to add it later ok?
anyways we rode all night(just to get back home) and arrived in this place called crabbe, at a resort that was about 1 k from the beach arrivng there zach and i got our room key and after we got settled we all walked to the beach and swam for a couple of hours, the beach was beautiful, and you could see these crazy lookintg islands out in the water, you know thier taller than they are wide like big cliffs risin up out of the water, we actauklly had the genius idea to swim out to one, and i swear that stupid rock was at least a mile offshore, also there were these little jelly fish thingies in the water and theyd sting the hell out of you if out swam into them!
well after like 20 min of swimmin we made it walked around a bit, then headed home, we ended up staying there something like 3 nights.
one of the days we wend snorkeling, we all got in to a boat, and it took us all over the place, to different snorkelling spots and islands, at this one island we were shoked to find out that clayton(brazil) my friend couldent swim, so we all gave him impromptu lesson, and well now he....
can doggy paddle-confidently

ok so this next part was probably the craziest funniest thing ever one of the stops on the bat tour thing was this sand bar connecting 2 islands so we got out and jumped in the water which is only like 4 feet deep and started doing chicken fights, you know were the guy holds a girl on his shoulders and the girls try to push the other girls off, cmon everyone knows that game, anyways we had a few bouts with all the guys playing(it was hillarious we started getting crowds of thai people cheering us on and everything),and they always turned into a grudge match between julian an megan and karley and me(karley its not your fault, meg just has man arms)
while we were resting some of us started talking with a group of old thai ladies, and one of them started to talk about the chicken fights, so we asked if they wanted to do one!!
my parter agreed in a heartbeat, but it took a while to convince the lady in blue to hop up on julians shoulders, but eventually she agreed!

so herejulian and i are with 2 50ish year old thai ladies on our shoulders charging at eachother in the ocean off the cast of thailand.

i cant belive this is my life.

after a glorious and hardcore battle my parter trumphantly threw the blue lady off of juliand shouders, and we both celebrated our vicotry...over a thai senior citizen.

besides fighting old ladies we snorkled alot, and let me tell you this water was gorgeeous!
it was a good 20 feet to the bottom, but you could see every thing!!
there were fish in all shapes and sizes and in colors that i didnt even know!
it was great, you could swim down to the bottom and chill with the fish, and feed them bread and suff like that!
sweet. what else
oh this was a crazy thing, so zach and i just got back from the beach, and we were goin to our room, when we found a cat, we hung outside with it, and i followed us into the room we played with it for a while, and when zach took a shower i fell asleep with the beastie on my chest.(alight im gonna take this time to call zach and me idiots, do you know why, well... were in an improvished country and we let some wild animal into our room and played with it, catch my drift?) so when i woke up i took a showere and when i got out i asked zach hey where did the cat go, he looks at me and lets out a few choice phrases and starts ranting how the "#@$!ing" thing bit him!
and we didn t think too much about it till later at dinner when zach was talking about it and one of the girls brought up the questiuon about rabies!
so half an hour zach me and holly and karely are in the er of the local hospital and zach and holly are gettin rabies shots.
moral of the story:
dont be an idiot and play with wild animals!
that noight was easter, and all the exchng students had a candy hunt kinda thing, but since the 4 of us were at the hospital we didnt see it, but they did saveus alot of candy for later!

so the next big thing we did was that we all got onto a boat and took it too this one island, alright are there any james bond fanns out there???
anyone remember the man with the golden gun?
rember the island with sacaramangas secret lair, with the cool island, the midget and "THE PLANE!!!"

yeah we went there...
like a dream come true!!!!(cause, well i love james bond)
it was fun we hung out for a while, along with evey other foriegner on earth!!
after that we went to this man made island that was just one huge market!
thats where i saw her..
the angel.

ill tell you about that in a min ok..
so we really just walked through this market checking things out and getting pictures with monkeys!
yeah they had these random dudes carrying around monkeys that you could take a pic with, we felt like farangs doin it cause it was a total tourist thing, but cmon... who can say no to an monkey?

alright dudes so heres the angel story-
so im just about to leave with maria and thers this door that separates the expensive market from the rest and im jsut about to walk throught it when-
i was graced by beautiful-no stunning, gogeous woma-no i dont belive she was a mere woman!!
an ANGEL was sent to me that day!
i opened the door and there she stood in all of her glory, my mouth dropps, i frezze and kinda get this dazed deer in the headlights look on my face- and she flashes me a coy smile that melts me!
then she kinda does this thing where she looks down, bobs her head catches eyes with me, and as i gaze into her sea grean eyes shewhispers, as if just to me
"hello"

and then i feel my heart being ripped out as maria shoves me through the door and her tour group pushes her the opposite way.
i gotta say though in those 2.5 seconds of bliss my life flashed forward and i saw myself in a whit victorian style house with a red door a tire swing in the yard, white picket fence, a dog and 2.5 kids!
so when im ranting this story to my jriends in the boat, julian jumps up grabbs me and goes"ryan. chances are you will never ever see this girl(angel) again, you are gonn a come with me right now and find out her name!"
"done."
so here we are racing through this floating market pushing past old germans and tour groups trying to find this mystery girl.
we searched high low, scouring the entire island, we even ran through a couple backyards(people livethere too) until we finnaly admitted defeeat(at this point we were pretty late for the boat)and started walking bach when out of the corner of my eye i catch a flash of baby blue, i look and i see herleading a group of older german dudes back to the boats, julian and i ythink fast and take stratiegig possitions in the expensive part of the market, i start to "buy shirts" and wait for her to come in,
closer...
closer...
closer...
NOW!
i turn to talk to her...
and she walks right past me!
we probably should have given up there, but no , not us!
i again straticely place myself and jjulian comes in an flanks her so she stops and since im rather smart and cunning, i ask
"hey you look alot like a friend of mine"-
"well im not"(ooooh that kinda stung)
julian and i ask her name, julian points to a name badge shes wearing, and she, in that voice that will haunt my dreams says
"hannah"
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
then we hear champ(one of our guides)yelling HURRY UP WERE LEAVING!!!
so we say goodbye and thats the last time i saw her...

hmmm what else happened, oh ok so we left that hotel, and packed our backpacks for 3 days, and left the rest of our stuff in the bus and we were told that we would be staying 2 nights in some national park, ok so i grab my guitar and bag and hop in the bus!
turns out that that this national park was an island... about 4 hrs off of the mainland!
we all scramble aboard a 2 decker boat and pass the time by playing guitar, watching the flying fish(very cool, first time ive ever seen them, they qwould fly right in front of the boat!) playing cards, you know just hangin out...
4hrs later we are at a pit stop, its an island nearby ours where we can snorkel and swim to the beach where theres these huge rope swings hanging from these ancient looking trees!
we d'd around there for a whle, as usual, the beach was perfect, water like glass, and fish aplenty(it was sweet, wheni i was heading back to the boat with my friends, we found ourself right above one of those huge swarms of massive silver kinda fish(you know like those videos you see on discovery channel right beore a seal comes and snatches em up?)i was able to dive like 10 feet down into the center of the swarm(whats a group of fish called? herd, a family, a gaggle? i dont know..)and just watch the 60+ fish swim all around me!
we got to the island in the afternoon, zach daniel andrew and i all calimed a choice bungalow 20yards from the shore, then all the dudes met down on the beah with the glorious scheme of build ing the biggest snd castle/man-fort on earth(a couple of the guys had already bought a huge 40 gallon bucket to help do it with) we soon found out that the bucket didnt work too well(we couldent flip it and get the sand out in one pice at all, so we refined our original idea so that we would be digging the biggest man-hole(ha get it) in thailand!
with the help from a metal pole, and 2 buckets the hole had grown a good 12 foot circle, and about 3-4 feet deep( we were actually makin a fire place, but the park ranger came and yelled at us(in thai of course) so we ditched that idea, but overall we had dug one huge triumphant bastard of a hole.

that night megan and i played guitar on the beach, we all went for a night swim, the guys succedded in buildin a good fire on the beah(castaway style too, you know with the trough that you blow air though!)and i learned how to play what could quite be one of the greatest card games on earth(its called euchere, appaerntly its a polish game... i dont know what thats supposed to mean, but it is. ill teach you guys when i get home, cause like i said, its the funnest card game ive ever played)
oh yeah also this island was INFESTED with hermit crabs and massive bats, which was way cool, cause if you looked close enough you could see tons of shells walkinthrough the shadows and if you looked up you could see these big batman symbols flying from tree to tree and screeching like crazy!
the next day we got up early, and piled on the boat and it started taking to different snorkelling and swimmin spots on different islands.
it was great, whenever weed get to another spot, weed dive, flip, jump or fall off the second story of the boat into the crystal clear water swim ashore, or chill in the water and watch the fish lazily swimming below us.
we ended up goin to some cool island where we would climb the gigantic rock/mountain andnd stand ontop and look out over the whle ocean(actually its a sea, but i forgrt the name of it, so ill just call it an ocean ok?)
we also had diving and flip contests of of this boat, it was hillarious diving 20 feet or so into the water!
we ate on the boat, and got a huge euchere tournament going- oh i almost forgot!!!

one of the stops was supposed to have sea turtles at it, but we never saw any, and while we were eating lunch, my frinds and i were playing cards on the first floor, wwhen all of a sudden we hear a thai dude yell
"Taow!!! Taow!!!" i look over and see him pointin to the right side of the boat, i wrack my the thai section of my brain for what the heck taow means, and i reamember a roung doughnut hole kinda food that vendores sell on the side of the road called kai taow(which means turtle eggs) and i realize that he saw a turlte!
i hear people jumpin over board, so i mask off the table and hop out the window and land in the water about 5 feet from a huge turtle, that looks over, sees all of us then casually starts to swim away(sure i had just dried off, and we totally had to star the card game over again, but it was so worth it! i swam with sea turtles off the coast of thailand!)
that night we basically did the same thing and chilled on the beach, we all played a game of beach football, and when it got dark we all went over to the manhole and hung out in there for a couple hours.
only lame thing was that we got moved to a tent inland, and away from the beach
where the mosquitos were the size of small birds!
im serious these were the biggest mosquitos ive ever seen-and i live in thailand!
after a night of bug bites(i seriously think i lost like a pound due to blood loss)
we all got onto the boat and settled in for the ride back to mainland, once we got back we hoopped in the bus and drove for the island of phuket.
as usual we listened to music played cards and slept, i really dont know why im telling you all that, it should be a given!
hmm what happended in phuket?
first night we went to this crazy lookout where you could see up and down the coast, later on we went out to some discotheques, and saw thai bands
alright so heres one major thing that happened, i mean major MAJOR!
we were all out at a mall one day, when me 3 guys and 3 girls ran into a accesory store, you know the thind that pierces ears........

http://youtube.com/user/rynalias

check out my youtube site for the videos of what happened!!!
cause im not gonna say any more on that subject!
(i added part one and 2 of the piercing, and a video of me and zach washing our clothes in the hotel bathtub)

where was i?
oh, so after that episode that night we went out to this thing called uhh..
something like phantasy thailand, in short it was kinda like a thai disneyland, that had the biggest buffet in thailand and had a kinda cirque du solei type show!
it was fun, we all got dressed up and ate at this massive buffet, it had eveything!
what we all devoured though were the french fries(good frenchfries in thailand are hard to come by)i even got in a pretty heated discusion whith yuki(shes from japan)about the best kind of sushi, she said the raw salmon, i say its the raw tuna, whatever, what does she know, its not like shes jappenese or anything, oh nevermind.

ok you know how some people in america say clowns scare them?
thats ok, sometimes they can be creepy, but for me its nothin to have a phobia over.
thats until i saw thai clowns.
these could b-words could quite possibly be the most horrifying things ive ever seen!
theyre super tall and dressed in these cultlike robes, have huge devil eyes(you could see thier balck souls) gargantuan hook noses, claws and terrifying rows of needle sharp teeth!
i couldent handle it.
no.
not. at. all.
ant then thed come at you and try to get HUGS like they were just mickey mouse, or tigger, and not this monstrosity from hell!!
i ran.

so.
about the show...
it was cool from my understanding it was the story of a boy who had a magical elepahant, and he traveled thailand righting wrongs until some bad dude took his girlfriend, then he and the magiacal elepant, along with an amry attacked pad dudes castle and tooke her back! the show had some pretty intese accrobaticts, with sword fights live elepahnts onstage cannonfire and people bunggee jumping off the celing
overall a pretty sweet night!

the next day we strted the long ride home, it took us a day and a half to get back, and we stayed in some random city in the south, cool thing though was we got cheese burgers and fries at our last hotel!
like i said before, good fries and burgers are hard to find(the other day i found out that 7-11s sell hot dogs with actual buns and mustard, IT BLEW MY MIND!!!)
that night jullian and i went out to see if we could find a dance club or place with music, but all we found was one of the biggest night markets wed ever been to, so we walked around there and picked up these thai versions of strawberry milkshakes before heading back to the 7 and eventually the hotel.

oh i forgot to tll you about how my how one night my heart broke!
i was walking around the city one night with my friends when all of a sudden and no warning at all my foot catches in a grate, and my left rainbow(you know my glorious leather indectuctable sandals ive had for like a year)snagges and i hear a rip.
i look dow and my heart breaks.

Mom in Thailand

I know you all have been anxiously awaiting my Blog, but it has taken me this long to figure out how to sign in to Ryan's Blog. So, here it is:

I arrived in Thailand on the 15th of March at 1:45 am, now keep in mind that I left Sacramento on the 13th. With time zones and all, it took that long to get there. I flew in to Tapei and made a quick dash over to the waiting airplane to get me over to Thailand. I was greeted by Ryan and it was an emotional reunion. Oh, how I've missed him. I greeted his family, his mom, dad, brother and grandparents all met me at the airport. We all piled in the car along with my luggage and we spent the night at a nearby hotel. Ryan & I stayed up past 4:00 am just talking and letting him open cards and gifts; he said it felt like Christmas!

The next morning we had breakfast at the hotel and we headed north to where he lives. We visited the King's palace (the King from 100 years ago), it was quite beautiful. And after that we stopped along the way to ride an elephant! What an experience that was, and it certaintly wasn't like riding a horse. We had many laughs along the way. While we were there, we also fed a Bengal tiger some milk...ok, a young Bengal tiger!

The next day Ryan & I caught a songtail (bus) to Khon Kaen where me met with other exchange students. We had lunch, played Guitar Hero and went bowling. Oh, we also went to Swensens and we all shared an Earthquake...all you Swensens fans will know what that is! We then hung around for the night market and got to shop around there for a while. That's where they have all the interesting fried bugs that you can eat. Did I? Oh no!

On Monday, we went to see Ryan's great-grandma. She gave me a bracelet which wished me happiness, richness and good health. So, if my bracelet breaks, does that mean they won't come true? Yikes!

We also went to see the property of trees that Ryan's grandparents own. They have Eucalyptus, Teak, Rubber and Coconut trees. We had a nice drive out to their tree farms.

I met Dr. Urot...he's the doctor that Ryan had shadowed at the hospital. Very nice gentleman and very young too. From there, I was introduced to Ryan's 2nd host parents.

We ventured back down to Khon Kaen and shopped at the mall, went to a temple with Meagan and Maria (climbed 9 stories) and we had Thai style iced tead when we finished at the temple.

That night we had a nice dinner with Ryan's 2nd host parents and their son. We headed to bed because we had an early morning trip planned. Ryan & I were going camping up at Phuk Ra Deung (National Park), so we got up at 4:15 to head over to the mountain.

So, it's Tues and we hiked the mountain. I believe it's 4,500 feet high and it took us 6 hours to climb it. It was hot and probably the most intense hike I have ever done, but we made it! We rented a tent, blankets and pillows so we didn't need to carry that stuff with us. We didn't have to carry our luggage either, a porter carried it to the top of the hill for us, those guys are animals!! Imagine carrying that stuff to the top, we barely made it ourselves!

We woke the next morning at 4:30 to watch the sunrise. It was quite incredible. We came back and crashed (slept) for a few hours to prepare ourselves for the next hike. We walked about 5 miles to this one location to watch the sunset but the weather was changing quickly and they didn't think there would be a sunset, so we headed back...another 5 miles. We ended up seeing a beautiful sunset on our way home and arrived back at the camp in the dark. We enjoyed a nice Pad Thai dinner and we headed to bed...only to be awakened in the night by either a deer or a boar that had a bag stuck on it's head! It was too dark to figure out what animal it was...we did see both animals earlier in the evening. Ask Ryan which one he thought it was!

Thursday morning we headed down the hill after we left our luggage with a porter to carry it down. A surprise to us was the fact that Ryan's host grandparents met us part way up the hill (the first rest stop up the hill). We walked down with them and had lunch with them and Tuk. After questioning what type of fish was in my soup, Tuk said it was Snake Fish...go figure! I'm not inquiring any more after that!

We went in to town to pick up a guitar case for Ryan and some things he needed for his Rotary trip to Phuket...that's pronounced Poo Ket by the way! We had soup for dinner that Atom (brother) picked up at the local restaurant, very good by the way!

Friday morning we were up early to visit with Ryan's possible 3rd host mom. She owns a stationery store just down the street from where they live. Ryan's 2nd host mom met us and we all had lunch together. We ran a few errands and said good bye to great-grandma and we headed to Korat to take Ryan to the location where all the exchange students were meeting to go on their trip to Phuket. Ryan and I had a tearful good-bye...ok, I had the tearful good-bye. It was hard to say good-bye again, but we'll see him in June!

We went to KFC for dinner, yes, Kentucky Fried Chicken! The only thing I can say is that the chickens aren't as fat in Thailand as they are at home. It was still good, but not fat on the meat! After dinner, we pulled up to the hotel in Bangkok called "Lam Park." Tuk, Atom & I shared a room.

The next morning we were up at 6:00 am to beat the morning traffic. We dressed up to go to the Imperial Palace, but found out that Atom & I couldn't go in to see the King's sister, because our clothes weren't black...only black clothing was allowed.
Oh, how I wish I was back in shorts and sandals! We still saw the rest of the palace grounds which was nice.

Tuk surprised me with a boat ride which I enjoyed. You ought to see these long boats, they are fast and the engine in them is huge, with a long rudder and propeller. We climbed to the top of a temple "Temple of Dawn" which actually gave a nice view of Bangkok. Afterward we had a nice lunch and then went to another temple.

We took Atom back to the hotel and Tuk, her friend and I went for a massage (Thai massage). Pretty relaxing especially after having hiked the mountain...I didn't realize how sore I was from coming down the mountain! We picked up her friends daughter and we all had a nice dinner at the mall at MK restaurant (suki soup).

Well, it's Sunday and it's my last day. We were up at 7:00 to go to the airport by 8:30. I got there in plenty of time for my 12:30 flight. We said good bye and it was difficult to say good bye to Tuk, she was such a wonderful hostess and I told her she has been a good mom to Ryan...I think we were both crying by then! So, I turned to go on my flight with Ryan's guitar in one hand and my laptop in the other.

It was a good flight home, long, but good. I left on Easter and came home on Easter.
I was greeted by Cody, Charlotte (our exchange student from France) and my loving husband Dennis. It was so good to be home, but it was also such a wonderful trip.
I've been filled with many delightful memories of sharing time with my son in Thailand.

I love you Ryan, give my best to your family in Thailand (parents, brother, grandparents, great-grandma and friends). Now it's his turn to fill you in on his trip to Phuket. I'm looking forward to hearing about it also.
